Place-Responsive and Community-Based Education

Our discussions about authentic learning contexts are inseparable from discourses on place-based, or place-responsive learning. Succinctly put, place-based education is about exploring a place’s inherent curriculum. After all, everywhere, to some degree, has math, geography, history, science and art within it. Anywhere can be thought about, written about, discussed and even transformed—for better or for worse. By having students engage with a place’s inherent curriculum, that place is no longer ‘anywhere’; it becomes a ‘storied’ place that is full of meaning for those who have sought to become part of it (Henderson, 2010). Indeed, teachers need to be careful to ensure that the places in which they are learning and the meanings ascribed to the phenomena unfolding within it have strong relevance to students’ lives (Dirkx et al., 1999).

Wattchow and Brown (2011) suggested the following four key questions for place-responsive educators:

What is here in this place?

What will this place permit us to do?

What will this place help us to do?

How is this place interconnected with my home place?
